Dinner at the Lake - February 18, 2012
Mysteries of the Aurora Borealis: the Northern Lights
with Bob Lysak - professor of Physics and Astromony at U of MN
Reserve early!

The dancing, shimmering glow of the northern lights has amazed mankind for centuries. Early northern peoples from Alaska to Siberia have wondered about the lights and created legends to explain them. Now in the space age, experiments flown on satellites and rockets have led to a greater understanding of the aurora and how it is affected by solar activity. I will summarize modern thinking about the causes of the aurora, as well as showing many pictures of this phenomenon.
Bob Lysak has been a faculty member at the University of Minnesota’s School of Physics and Astronomy since 1982, after receiving a Ph.D. in physics at the University of California, Berkeley and doing post-doctoral research at Berkeley and in Munich, Germany. He has specialized in the theory and modeling of auroral acceleration processes during all of that time and is recognized internationally as an expert in this field. He has recently been honored by being named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and is the editor of the scientific journal, the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics.
