ACNW Wildlife program

Reptiles and Amphibians

How are reptiles and amphibians similar? How do they differ?  Do we need to be afraid of these animals?  Do they benefit people?  Students will explore the answers to these questions while meeting and interacting with live reptiles and amphibians.

Amphibians

Aquatics

Students will learn about the secret lives of the insects that live under the water.  Which insect predators liquefy and remove the insides of their prey leaving just the exoskeleton?  Which insects eat mosquitoes their whole life?  Why should we all be familiar with which insects live in our local waters?  Students will explore the answers to these questions while seeing live macro invertebrates projected on a big screen through an LCD projector.

Renewable Energy

As energy becomes a larger issue in today’s world it is important for students to become aware of other energy options available to us.  The entire renewable energy curriculum is hands on experimentation.  Programs are 1 hour long and geared towards 4th – 9th grade students, however they can be tailored for older or younger students if desired.  Since the programs are hands on they are limited to classroom sized audiences.

Energy – Students learn about different types of energy, and the pros and cons of renewable energy through activities and games.  Students learn how energy conservation impacts the rest of the world and future generations

Energy Conservation – Students explore different ways of conserving energy while conducting an energy audit of their school.

Geothermal Energy – Students learn about geothermal energy by studying basic geology of the earth and exploring why geothermal is a good alternative to fossil fuels through hands on experiments.

Acid Rain – Students investigate the causes and effects of acid rain. They will learn how to measure acidity and will test soil on school grounds to see how well it can buffer effects from acid rain.

Wind Energy – Students will explore how the wind has been harnessed in the past.  They will also evaluate their school grounds to see if it has enough wind to support a turbine.  Students will get to work with a functioning model turbine.

Solar Energy – Students explore the different applications of solar energy through games and hands on activities.  Students will learn about the abundance of available solar energy, get an introduction to passive solar energy, as well as a demonstration on how a photovoltaic cell works.

Naturalist in Residence

For schools that are lucky enough to have their own natural area (forest, pond, and prairie) or have access to one near their school.  Audubon Center naturalists will work with interested teachers in designing programs to take students outside.  School staff are encouraged to join us to gain ideas on how to incorporate the outdoors into their everyday curriculum.

Our Mission:
To protect, improve and promote the enjoyment of the
natural environment through formal and informal
education programs and research; to assist and encourage
environmental education programs, centers, and careers.

Our Vision:
The environment is the blackboard for the Center's
educational programs; the common ground that brings us
together with the natural world and people from around
the globe to share our concerns for one another and the
future. It is through positive and shared experience that
we hope we can affect the values and actions of our
people to create a world of harmonious diversity.
